Peer Engagement Specialist

Our Client, The Rescue Mission of Utica, is seeking a Peer Engagement Specialist to support their expanding and dynamic organization.

 Job Title:  Peer Engagement Specialist

 Job Summary:  This position will be an on-call responder to assist emergency department staff in discharge planning for substance abusing patients that were treated for overdose and/or complications of substance use disorder. This position is for the Mohawk Valley Region and would cover Oneida, Herkimer, Otsego and Montgomery counties.

 Essential Job Functions

  • Understand principles and concepts of motivational interviewing and patient centered care.
  • Encourage options and choices including Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT), when appropriate.
  • Assist patients in establishing benefits in order to obtain treatment.
  • Advocate for patients in a professional manner and use appropriate channels.
  • Model appropriate use of personal story and self-advocacy.
  • Promote a recovery and wellness oriented lifestyle.

 Minimum Job Qualifications

  • Individual(s) must possess one of the following: OASAS Peer Advocate Certification, OASAS Recovery Coach Certificate, CASAC, CASAC-T, or an Associate’s Degree in Chemical Dependency, Social Work or Human Services with a willingness to obtain one of the aforementioned credentials.
  • Understand person-centered recovery and the right to self determination
  • Knowledge of community resources specific to substance abuse treatment and MAT
  • Knowledge of resources for insurance coverage and how to navigate the benefits system
  • Understand HIPAA, protected health information and confidentiality
  • Ability to work on call, nights and weekends in response to the demand
  • Respond to calls from ER within 30 minutes
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Outlook.
  • Clean/valid NYS Driver’s License
  • Enthusiastic support of our Mission Statement.

 Status/Hours:  Part-Time-Saturday and Sunday – 9a-9p (every other weekend), on call Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday – 12a-8a (every other week).

 Pay Rate: $16.00 per hour
