Accounting Specialist

The Accounting Specialist performs a full range of accounting functions for the Agency and its affiliates. This includes and is not limited to calculation of revenue and expense entries into the General Ledger, implementation of departmental policies and procedures in accordance with GAAP and CFR guidelines, and reconciliation of various Balance Sheet accounts.  The Accounting Specialist researches departmental policies and makes suggestions to management regarding efficiencies and process improvements.  This position is also responsible to attend relevant trainings as needed, with both internal and external governmental and private organizations, to keep up-to-date with regulatory changes. 

 

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

Activities include but are not limited to the following:

*            Prepare monthly intercompany management bills based on contracted service agreements.

*            Calculate various revenues and expenses, along with their proper allocations, based on approved CFR reporting methodologies and GAAP.

*            Analyze month-to-month expense trends and calculate expense accruals.

*            Assist with annual CFR preparation.

*            Assist with the month-end closing process.

*            Reconcile and analyze various Balance Sheet accounts.

*            Identify errors from data and make appropriate corrections prior to entry into the General Ledger.

*            Establish a work environment that creates positive communication between supervisors and employees and assimilates new employees to the Agency’s culture, values and mission.

*            Ensure compliance with all pertinent government and agency regulations and operating standards.

*            Must be able to maintain focus in a very busy work environment.

*            Must have a strong attention to detail.

*            Must be able to manage time independently, adhering to all deadlines including unexpected demands for information and/or additional assignments.

*            Must have professionalism in all decision making.

*            Use of good judgment based on regulatory and quality standards is required.

*            Maintain professional boundaries and confidentiality.

*            When reporting for duty, meetings, or trainings be in a condition suitable for assuming responsibilities of the position.

*            Exercise tact, discretion and judgment in working with a variety of people.

*            Legible handwriting.

*            Must possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances are warranted.

*            Must be able to manage and cope in sometimes stressful situations.

 

QUALIFICATIONS/EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

*            Bachelor’s Degree required in Accounting desired

*            Prior accounting experience preferred.

*            This position will work with Microsoft Excel on a regular basis.  Advanced Excel experience preferred. 

*            Intermediate Computer Skills (Windows, Outlook, Adobe Acrobat, Word)
